look at those states that you just showed, ohio, florida and virginia, mitt romney is not in any of those today. mitt romney, they have plans to be in places like michigan, minnesota and pennsylvania, states that david axelrod, the obama campaign strategist, just was on a conference call with reporters saying he bets his mustache that romney won't win any of those three states. so you look at the romney campaign spending resources in places like wisconsin, sending paul ryan to wisconsin to me does not project a campaign that thinks it's winning. they should put everything they have got into ohio. yesterday there was that quasicampaign/relief effort. they got a little burned for it because it was seen for what it was, a campaign event, but that's where they need to double down. because barack obama if he wins ohio, he could lose virginia and florida and still win. >> they have been doubling down. they spent all of this time in ohio and because of sandy spent more time in ohio. but if we look at early voting polling that is coming out of ohio and then florida, the president leads. is

to more than 10%. ali, that looks like a positive trend for the president. how does governor romney make the case that it would get way better way sooner if ohio makes a change for romney, ali? >> well, he does it by approximating to some degree. he does it by saying this state has prospered under a republican governor. look, this is a state that is split. it's a virtual dead heat. obama's got a bit of a lead, but as you know it's within that statistical margin of error so it could be a few points off one way or the other. it will come down to who comes out to vote. the last few days will be about encouraging those who have already decided. there's very little left in terms of evidence as to what you could do to possibly tell people i'm your guy. the question is you are sort of leaning towards me. do i go out and do it. mitt romney has made some errors in the last week or so in ohio, particularly with this issue of jeep and chrysler, getting money in the auto bailout and supposedly transferring manufacturing, having intention to transfer manufacturing to china. that is not playing w

up and governor romney is traveling into states that he's not going to win. but what really matters in terms of the electoral college, we're the ones playing offense. few weeks ago, governor romney's campaign was saying we're going to win florida and virginia. on monday, the day before the election, governor romney is going to florida and virginia, why, because he's at great risk to lose those states. we're playing offense on states they thought they had the inside track on and they don't. i think a lot of this is a smoke screen to try and mask the fact in the places that will play a factor, it's going to be close. but they're definitely in a weak position heading into election day. >> so, is there anything that worries you in these final 48 hours? >> sure, george. listen, four years ago, when this time two days out, everybody felt we were sailing to victory. we were very concerned. because support levels don't mean anything if they don't materialize into votes. the president and first lady, former president clinton is going to be with us in new hampshire. but this really comes down

[ cheers ] but during governor romney's campaign for governor down there, he promised the same thing he's promising now. said he'd fight for jobs and middle class families, but once he took office, he pushed through a tax cut that overwhelmingly benefited 278 of the wealthiest families in the state and raised taxes and fees to middle class families to the tune of $750 million. does that sound familiar to you? when asked about this, he says these weren't taxes, these were fees, but keep in mind, there were higher fees to be a barber, higher fees to become a nurse. there were higher fees for gas. there were higher fees for milk. there were higher fees for blind people who needed to get a certificate that they were blind. he raised fees to get a birth certificate which would have been expensive for me. . the republicans have tended to campaign most heavily in the western part of the state. mitt romney, for example, has made several appearances in the state, but he has not campaigned in the eastern half of the state at all. whereas, president obama has made quite a few appearances in the eastern part of the state, although not recently. that is also true of michelle obama and vice-president biden. they have a tendency to campaign in the eastern part of the state which is where their political strength has been. host: the president has not been in north carolina since the convention. are people taking notice of that? guest: yes. the president has not campaigned in north carolina since april. governor romney was here a few weeks back, made an appearance in asheville, but that was mainly to have a visit with polygram, a much publicized visit, a visit to convey the message that it was ok for religious conservatives to vote for a mormon. vice-president joe biden has been here several times. so, this has been a battleground state but not a top tier battleground state. clearly, we have not

romney gets the state of iowa on election day. the president would still be at 265 with ohio and wisconsin, then he just needs five more. new hampshire would give him four so that's not big enough. but obama campaign increasingly thinks the latino vote in nevada would do it. that would put the president over the top there. if he didn't get nevada for some reason, the president's options would be colorado, virginia, new hampshire or florida. the president with an easier path. what about governor romney. let's leave this one blue. can governor romney get there if ohio is going blue. can romney get all the way to 270 when the president's already at 275. well, he would have to win florida, he would have to win virginia. then you're at 255, 254. he would have to win colorado. that would put him in play at 263. then from there, how does governor romney get over the top? he would if he won wisconsin, paul ryan's home state. 10 electoral votes right there. logic being if the president's winning ohio, these are two very similar states. so wisconsin would be one model and let's just say fo

favor mitt romney while the president leads in some nine swing states. is it your sense that we could see the dreaded elector el popular vote split, and if so, what does that mean? >> well, i think it's very possible this time. i think one of the reasons is mitt romney could be getting really big margins in the south from texas across the south. which would roll up his popular vote. while the president wins some big states by narrower margins, and thus mitt romney wins the popular vote, barack obama wins the electoral vote and the presidency, like we had in 2000, and it raises questions going into governing. so i think what you see is the next day, mitch mcconnell and john boehner the republican leaders in the congress, stand up and say we'll speak for the majority of the country and therefore continue to oppose the president's agenda. >> what about you, amie? any words from inside the white house? are they mulling this prospect of the possible electoral vote split and how it might affect governing? >> i don't think they care so much about the national poll. they haven't really

and election day that governor romney or paul ryan campaigning in this state. 15 events and all. so they are laying all their cards down in ohio. 18 electoral votes are very important. one of the things they're having to sort of overcome here is whether governor romney is of a supporter of union workers. and the job of the car industry in particular. obviously president obama signed that auto bailout package. a lot of folks in ohio and some surrounding states are very appreciative of that. they believe they still have a job today because of that bailout. governor romney, on the other hand, was in favor of a managed bankruptcy for g.m. and chrysler. and so he's got to somehow get voters to look past that, that he would be a supportive president of union workers in this state. as you mentioned, governor romney is down in florida today. we are expected after this bus tour to head down there as well. but right now the polls are looking in the president's favor. the latest cnn poll has the president up 50-46. there's still some work to be done here but we can tell you that the folks who

critical state that could hold the keys not white house for governor romney and that is the state of ohio. historically no republican candidate has won the election without taking this battleground state. the latest poll shows governor romney in a dead heat with the president both at 48% and as obama is relying mainly on the quote auto bailout for a victor arery in the state, voters are more concerned about the overall economy. romney is leading obama when it comes to the handling of the economy. joining us is michael barone. what do you think? >> what is happening in ohio? well, this was one of the three firewall states. the obama campaign wanted to concentrate on three states where they got the lowest winning percentages in 2008 except for indiana and north carolina which they conceded, florida, ohio and virginia. since the october 3 debate, florida seems to be gone toward mitt romney. he has been winning almost all polls this. virginia has been even tending a little toward romney in my judgment. ohio has been a little stickier. are the auto bailout is an issue there. if you look at the

virginia as well as states across the country, the governor romney definitely has the momentum. we've seen polls where governor romney is up. we've seen polls that are tied. we've seen polls that have us a couple of points down. i think it is essentially an extremely close race that's going to come down to the wire but we feel very good. if you take a look at what's happening on the ground in virginia with the early vote. one thing that people need to start paying attention to is where the early votes are coming in in northern virginia, right outside of washington, d.c. we've seen the democrat participation in those counts has gone down since 2008 and we've actually ours go up. so that's going to be something that everybody should watch out for over the next couple of days. >> let's talk about quickly, early voting here in florida. yesterday we were in miami, today we're in gainesville, in-person early voting started in the sunshine state and i've got to tell you based on the folks i've talked to. based on what i've seen. the gop appears to be in real trouble when it comes to e
